Relationships, Sex and Health Education

Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) is concerned with the overall growth and development of the individual child or young person and is therefore seen as an integral part of the PSHE & Citizenship curriculum.

Polden Bower School values the role parents and carers play in helping and supporting their child to cope with emotional and physical aspects of growing up and preparing them for the challenges and responsibilities which come with sexual maturity. Polden Bower seeks to complement and support the role of parents and carers whilst recognising the difficult issues surrounding sexuality for young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.

Parents and Carers are consulted regarding the curriculum content that is to be delivered. Where parents and carers have questions and want to discuss the content of what is taught, these are welcomed by school leaders.

Students are taught in groups according to maturity, with due regard for moral considerations and values of the family and community.

There are occasions when external agencies may support this curriculum, this might include health professionals, the police or other professionals who can offer expertise in specific areas and offer alternative perspectives.

Sensitive issues are presented in a broad and balanced way, free from sensationalism and personal bias.

There are a range of topics that will be covered:

  • Mental wellbeing
  • Internet safety and harms
  • Physical health and fitness
  • Healthy Eating
  • Drugs, alcohol and tobacco
  • Health and prevention
  • Basic first aid
  • Changing adolescent body

Students will be taught about safeguarding and how to keep themselves safe, they will be taught about their rights and responsibilities, risks and respect.

It is important that our curriculum remains flexible and is taught appropriately for the age and developmental level of our students and that this is personalised for them to enable them to understand key concepts, skills and knowledge.

The RSHE Policy for Polden Bower School is currently under consultation and will be added to the website as soon as it has been agreed.
